RACE REPORT FINAL RACE
The Final Race was held from Tods Hotel 539 km from the loft with liberation at 6.50 am on Friday 26th July. There was little wind at liberation which soon picked up to a cross wind of up to 12 km/hr. There was some cloud and fog in patches to start but clear at release. The early morning was cold at 16 degrees Celsius but climbed rapidly during the day to 34 degrees Celsius (93 deg F) by 2 pm. From approximately 9.30 am the wind had swung to a headwind of about 14 km/hr and the sky was clear. The humidity was very dry from mid-morning and air temperature hot.
There were 473 pigeons sent to the race and 126 were timed before the clock was stopped on day 3. The first pigeon bred by Martin Hetzel from Germany was timed after 9 hours flying recording a velocity of 998 m/min with a 45 minute lead over Hash Family Loft of United States whose pigeon recorded a velocity of 920 m/min. There were 3 pigeons on day one and Royalties Loft of the Philippines timed his pigeon 1 hour 43 minutes behind the first pigeon with a velocity of 838 m/min.
There were 99 pigeons timed by the end of day 2 and a further 27 pigeons by the time the race was closed on day 3. The pigeons were in reasonable condition after the extremely challenging conditions and high temperatures experienced. 3 pigeons returned with hawk injuries, 2 were in race time.
Un-won prize money of $104 000 and un-won Entry Credits of $60 000 have been split evenly between these 126 prize winners and added to their winnings.
All pigeons timed will be offered for sale on auction. The auctions will be conducted online by PIPA and Best Pigeons as soon as possible after arrangements are made and details will be given in due course. All pigeons will have DNA testing done to confirm sex at the sales.
