RACE REPORT HOTSPOT 5

Hotspot 5 was held from Manada Dam 348 km Southeast of the loft. The weather was good with clear skies and the temperature peaked at 29 degrees Celsius (84 deg F). There was a cross wind from the East which picked up during the day and was gusting at times. Many of the pigeons stayed online but the late birds were coming back from the West from the Botswana side. The tracker results showed the pigeons drifted to the West offline but adjusted their course back to the loft. There was a deviation of 93 km between the most Westerly and most Eastly bird. We received reports of groups of pigeons 20 km West of Victoria Falls which we suspect went with the crosswind.

A total of 1184 birds were basketed for the race. Pigeons returned as follows;

The first pigeon clocked with a velocity of 1503 m/m
153 pigeons clocked within 20 minutes of the winner – 12.9%
222 birds in 30 minutes - 18.8%
283 birds in 1 hour - 23.9%
476 birds the first day - 40.2%
637 by close of the race on day two - 53.8%
46.2% did not return in race time.

26 more pigeons returned on day 3 most of which look in reasonable condition. They were shown on the recovery list for the next training toss.

A number of pigeons are injured from falcon and hawk attacks and may not recover in time for the final. Owners will be advised and a report given on each hawked pigeon.

Hotspot 6 is scheduled for Saturday 13th July and pays out 80 places valued at USD 59 400.
