RACE REPORT HOTSPOT 5
Hotspot 5 was raced on Friday 15th July ahead of a cold front bringing high winds and overcast weather. The weather on Friday was clear and cool with a high Southeast wind. The winning pigeons that stayed online recorded high velocities. Many late pigeons came back from neighbouring countries flying into a headwind. We have had reports of pigeons in Zambia to our North. 5 pigeons returned with hawk injuries.
The trackers showed that they remained on course and all trackers returning after 5 hours stopped for water.
There were 2721 pigeons sent to the race with 1888 returning on the day. When the race closed on the second day 2285 were home. 436 birds did not return in race time (16%).
An interesting observation is that 11 trackers all converged and passed over the release site at the 77 km training point. This is another clear indication that the pigeons use landmarks they remember to help navigate.
The Super Ace competition with its prize pot of USD 700 000 is still very much in contention with 1 000 pigeons still in the running.
