RACE REPORT HOTSPOT 4
Hotspot 4 from 382 km was raced on Monday 4th July. The sky was clear with cool temperatures in the early morning which increased rapidly during the day as usual. There was a Northeast wind which was a strong crosswind and sometimes headwind. There were numerous hawk attacks with 23 pigeons arriving with injuries. 2 have subsequently died from injuries.
The majority of the Trackers showed that the pigeons deviated off course flying downwind from the direct route. Pigeons that stayed on course recorded velocities of 1500 m/m. Most of the Trackers flew further because of the deviation. One Tracker flew 501 kms including over the dry arid terrain of Botswana and would most likely have been with other pigeons. 25 Trackers were recorded, 5 did not stop at watering points. The Tracker flying the furthest west was 168 km off line. The pigeons that came late are in reasonable condition and the Trackers showed that they waited after stopping for water before continuing with their journey home. Most of the Trackers flew about 200 meters above ground level.
By the time the clock was stopped there were 2557 pigeons home of the 4116 sent to the race, 38% did not return in race time.
The Super Ace competition with its prize pot of USD 700 000 is still very much in contention with 1 172 pigeons still in the running.
