FINAL RACE BASKETING 2020-08-12

    FINAL RACE BASKETING

The basketing for the final race has been completed. There is a total of 859 pigeons going to the race. There was one pigeon that was withdrawn having sustained a hawk attack unnoticed in a lead up to the basketing.

The weather conditions for race day Friday 14th shows a very strong east/ cross wind in the beginning with an increase in daytime maximum temperatures. About half way through the flight the birds will pass over about 200 km of a very dry region with little opportunity to find water. The final 200 km has numerous watering points but it will be hot with a North East wind blowing. By shortening the race, it is hoped that the birds will be able to reach this region, as access to water will be essential due to the hot weather. It is possible for some of the pigeons to put up fairly high velocities but the majority will find the race difficult.

In light of the adverse conditions we have decided to shorten the race by 9% to 544 km with a 7am liberation. The race point will be Tamba on the road to Beitbridge. We unfortunately cannot delay the race as the temperatures are forecasted to continue to get hotter daily.
